Don't Cut Corners - Ensure Your Boiler Is Serviced

11-03-2019

It's been a year since Gas Safe Register launched their public awareness campaign - Don't Cut Corners With Gas.

The campaign's primary objective is to increase awareness of Gas Safe Register and encourage people to check the Register before an engineer works on gas appliances in their home.

But the campaign has discovered an alarming statistic.

1 in 10 People Don't Have Their Gas Appliances Serviced Annually

New research for Don't Cut Corners has found that 1 in 10 people have said they probably won't have their gas appliances serviced in the next year.

Shockingly 5% even said they would try and service their boiler themselves.

Adding to the concerning gas safety figures, the poll also found that 25% of people do not have a working carbon monoxide alarm.

Stay Safe & Reduce Costs

A faulty boiler can be extremely dangerous. An annual boiler service can help safeguard against fires, explosions, gas leaks and carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon Monoxide is a deadly gas that can kill quickly and without warning. In addition to an annual boiler service, fitting an audible carbon monoxide alarm can help protect those you care about from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Whilst protecting those you care about, an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer can also prevent heating wastage and even reduce your energy bills. Servicing also improves the reliability of your boiler to minimise future boiler repairs and extend your boiler's lifespan.

Don't Cut Corners with Gas

Cutting corners with gas safety puts you and your loved ones at risk. Always follow the following steps to protect yourself from gas dangers:

  • Only use a Gas Safe Registered engineer to fit, fix or service your gas appliances
  • Ensure your gas appliances are regularly serviced and safety checked every 12 months
  • Fit an audible carbon monoxide (CO) alarm
  • Check for warning signs such as lazy yellow flames, black marks or stains around your gas appliance
  • Know the six main signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning - headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness

Jonathan Samuel, Chief Executive at Gas Safe Register, said: "With so many things to juggle in this day and age it's understandable that some people look for quick and easy solutions, but when it comes to gas safety our message is clear - you cannot cut corners. Our new campaign highlights Gas Safe Register as the trusted source to find a qualified and legal gas engineer to work on gas appliances to make sure they're working safely and efficiently."

What Is The Gas Safe Register?

Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the UK, appointed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Gas Safe Register's role is to act as the licensing body and by law, all gas engineers must be Gas Safe Registered to work legally on gas appliances. Similar to how the DVLA issues driving licences to those who have demonstrated their competence by passing a driving test. Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body in the UK on 1st April 2009.

Always remember to check an engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card before allowing them to work on your gas appliances.
