Awareness of gas safety is vital to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Gas Safety Week is an annual event to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It is coordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas - which we at M&N Homecare are proud to be part of.

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is a highly poisonous gas that can kill quickly and without warning, as you cannot see it, taste it or smell it.

By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe.

Check your gas appliances every year. Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Tenants - make sure your landlord arranges this. Set a reminder so you don't forget at StayGasSafe.co.uk.
Look out for friends and relatives. Some people may be unable to arrange their own gas safety check or may be unaware of what they need to do to keep safe. Help your loved ones by ensuring that they have their appliances checked and serviced regularly.
Check your engineer is Gas Safe registered. You can find M&N's details on the Gas Safe Register.
Check your engineer is qualified for the type of gas work you need doing e.g. natural gas, domestic boiler. You can find this information on the back of their Gas Safe ID card and on the Gas Safe Register website.
Check for warning signs that could indicate your (or others) appliances are not working correctly. Signs may include lazy yellow /orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out and too much condensation in the room.
Know the six main symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning - headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm and make sure your friends and relatives have one too. Check they are marked EN50291 and display the British Standards' Kitemark.

The insurance comparison website collaborated with property expert Henry Pryor, renowned for his regular commentary and analysis on BBC, ITN and Sky News, to determine which home improvement projects are estimated to increase your property value the most.

How To Defrost Your Condensate Pipe - 2020 Update

A frozen condensate pipe could cause your boiler to breakdown in cold weather conditions.

Defrosting your boiler's condensate pipe is a task that can be completed without the need for a Gas Safe registered heating engineer.

How to defrost your condensate pipe

Modern boilers are extremely efficient and condensation is created as a by-product when heating water. A condensate pipe carries this condensation from your boiler to the drain outside your property. In cold weather conditions where the air temperature drops below 0ºC the condensate pipe can freeze, causing your boiler to breakdown.

Firstly, you'll need to locate your condensate pipe. It's usually a white or grey plastic pipe running from the underside of your boiler through the wall directly behind, then along the external wall to your outside drain.

Your condensate pipe is likely to be frozen at its most exposed point, this may be the open end of the pipe above your drain, or at a bend or elbow in the pipework. Run your hand over the pipe until you find a section that is colder than the rest.

There are several methods to defrost your condensate pipe:

Poor warm water over the affected areas of the pipework. Do not use boiling water as this could damage or crack the pipes.
Alternatively you could fill a hot water bottle, or a microwaveable heat pad, and apply to affected areas.

Once the frozen condensate pipe has been defrosted, switch your boiler back on and reset the fault code (if necessary). To avoid your condensate pipe freezing in the future, it may be worthwhile to consider the following preventative measures:

Insulate the external pipework with foam insulation.
Install a larger diameter condensate pipe and an increased gradient to prevent sitting water.
Install a condensate pump.
Rerun as much of the pipework as possible internally.

Whilst insulating your external pipework doesn't require you to be Gas Safe registered, the other preventative measures will need to be carried out by a qualified heating engineer.

It's been a year since Gas Safe Register launched their public awareness campaign - Don't Cut Corners With Gas.

The campaign's primary objective is to increase awareness of Gas Safe Register and encourage people to check the Register before an engineer works on gas appliances in their home.

But the campaign has discovered an alarming statistic.

1 in 10 People Don't Have Their Gas Appliances Serviced Annually

New research for Don't Cut Corners has found that 1 in 10 people have said they probably won't have their gas appliances serviced in the next year.

Shockingly 5% even said they would try and service their boiler themselves.

Adding to the concerning gas safety figures, the poll also found that 25% of people do not have a working carbon monoxide alarm.

Stay Safe & Reduce Costs

6 Simple Gas Safety Tips To Keep You Safe & Warm This Winter

The colder months are upon us & it's the time of year that we rely on gas more than ever to keep us warm & provide hot water.

But gas safety is not to be taken for granted. It's essential that all your gas appliances are working properly, efficiently, safely & don't break down when you & your family need them the most.

Ensure you are warm & safe over the forthcoming months with our gas safety tips:

1. Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix & service your appliances. We are proud to be on the official register. Our membership number is 621972.

2. If you require an engineer in your home, check both sides of their Gas Safe Register ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the ID card.

3. Have all your gas appliances regularly serviced & safety checked every year. If you rent your home ask for a copy of the landlord's current Gas Safety Record.

4. Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can be a silent killer. Protect yourself & your loved ones by knowing the six signs of CO poisoning - headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of CO poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.

If you suspect CO poisoning, do the following:

Get fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, turn off gas appliances and leave the house.
See your doctor immediately or go to hospital - let them know that you suspect CO poisoning. They can do a blood or breath test to check.
If you think there is an immediate danger, call the Gas Emergency Helpline on 0800 111 999.

A power flush can help maximise the efficiency of your boiler and central heating system.

After a power flush, your heating system could be restored to nearly-new condition, without the hassle or financial expense of replacing an old, inefficient boiler.

A power flush involves circulating high-strength cleansing chemicals, including a descaler, a corrosion inhibitor and a sludge breaker, throughout a central heating system in order to remove debris, rust and contaminants. The aim of a power flush is to improve system circulation and, therefore, efficiency that ultimately saves you money.

After your central heating system has been flushed, you'll know the benefits straight away. Internally your heating system will be operating much more efficiently. The cleaner flow of hot water may even reduce boiler and pipe noises!

Aside from the obvious cost-saving benefits of a more efficient central heating system, a power flush can help increase hot water temperatures, speed up radiator convection and provide peace of mind with less chance of boiler breakdowns.

Signs You Need A Power Flush

With annual boiler servicing and regular maintenance, a power flush should only be required every five years. A power flush should always be conducted before fitting a new boiler, but don't worry, we include a power flush with our boiler upgrades as standard. Any of the following could be a sign that your central heating system needs a power flush:

Inefficiency and lost heat - Poorly maintained heat systems can cause sludge, deposits, rust and debris to build up in pipes, radiators and the boiler. These blockages restrict the flow of water throughout the heating system, in some cases preventing heat from reaching all areas. This means lost heat and wasted money.
Little or no hot water - Blocked pipework and/or heat exchanger due to excess build up could also be the reason for your heating system producing little or no hot water.
Cold spots on radiators - If your radiators are cold at the bottom but hot at the top, your heating system could have a sludge problem. Cold spots are caused by the build up on iron oxide sludge, this collects at the bottom as its heavier than water, which restricts to the flow of hot water.
Dirty water when bleeding radiators - Bleeding your radiators can help improve heat cirulation and convection. However, if the water is discoloured when bleeding your radiatiors, this could be a sign your heating system needs a power flush.
Pump or valve seizure and/or failure - Black oxide sludge increases wear and tear on the shaft and bearings, which is the most common cause of pumps seizing or failing completely. A stuck valve could result in a very inefficient radiator.
Hidden signs - It should also be noted that even if you're not experiencing any of the above, your heating system could still be building up sludge and debris. As recommended, you should power flush your heating system every five years to prevent build up and inefficiency.

Replacing your boiler is a big purchase decision, one which you shouldn't consider without understanding what's best for you and your home. Here are a few things to consider when booking a quote with us.

Boiler Types

Focusing on gas boilers, there are three main types that we install: combination, heat-only and system. Don't worry if you're unsure which boiler type is best for you, our experienced team provides impartial advice and recommendations based on your home and hot water requirements. Combination Boiler

Live in a flat or small house with little storage? This boiler is most suited for your home.

Often referred to as a combi, these boilers heat water straight from the mains as and when required. This removes the need for a hot water cylinder and/or storage tank, which can save space in your home, particularly if you live in a small house or flat. It's worth noting however, that your water pressure may reduce when operating multiple facilities at the same time, i.e. having a shower in the bathroom and running the hot tap in the kitchen. Whilst hot water may take a few seconds to heat up, it is not limited by the volume of your hot water cylinder.

Heat-only Boiler

Live in a house with more than one bathroom? This boiler is suitable for your home, if you have lots of storage space.

Sometimes referred to as a conventional boiler, a heat-only boiler distributes hot water to your radiators and hot water cylinder. Heat-only boilers are better suited to larger homes as water flow doesn't reduce when operating multiple facilities at the same time. Hot water is, however, limited to the volume of your hot water cylinder and, when you run out, you'll have to wait for your hot water to heat up again.

System Boiler

Live in a house with more than one bathroom? This boiler is suitable for your home, if you have little storage space.

Similar to a heat-only boiler but with additional components, a system boiler doesn't require a storage tank. This reduces the necessity for more storage space and, again, is better suited to larger homes with more than one bathroom as water flow doesn't reduce when operating multiple facilities at the same time. As with a heat-only boiler, hot water is limited to the volume of your hot water cylinder, and you'll have to wait for additional hot water.

Boiler Size

Once you've established which boiler type is most suitable for your home, you need to consider the size.

Firstly, you'll want to check your new boiler would be able to match your heating and hot water requirements. Discovering which size boiler is right for you is a unique process, as it depends on your hot water usage and how many people live in your home. Secondly and more straight forward, you'll need to ensure your new boiler would physically fit where you wish for it to be installed. World Water Day 2018

Today is World Water Day. Occurring annually on 22nd March, World Water Day is organised by the United Nations (UN) to help highlight the importance of fresh water.

Last weekend we were the proud sponsors of our local football team Banbury United FC home game.

Banbury United is a community- & supporters-owned club and a brace from Ravi Shamsi with additional goals from Greg Kaziboni and M&N's own Charlie Wise helped The Puritans defeat Kettering Town 4-1 in the Evo-Stik League South.

In horrific weather conditions, 371 fans turned out and their bravery was rewarded with a great win and the result ending Kettering Town's unbeaten away run.

We couldn't be prouder of M&N team member Charlie Wise. Charlie started Saturday's scoring, heading home in the 39th minute.

His performance was described by Puritans boss, Mike Ford as, "outstanding" and we're delighted he and the team did so well during our sponsorship match.

A recent survey has found that a third of UK households are concerned about increasing energy bills this winter. Installing a highly efficient A+ boiler could help you combat rising energy prices with lower monthly bills.

The poll, conducted by uSwitch, found that 32% of bill payers are worried about how they'll pay for their energy usage once the colder weather sets in.

To assist those struggling with rising energy prices, the government has published draft legislation granting energy regulator Ofgem the power to cap standard variable tariffs until 2020. Average £121 Debt Per Household

In the meantime, an approximate 2.6 million UK households are heading into winter in debt to their energy supplier, owing a collective £318 million, according to additional research from uSwitch.com. 1 in 10 UK bill payers are facing winter already owing their energy supplier an average of £121, increasing by 9% to the same period last year.

Claire Osborne added, "We're only just into the autumn but already millions of households are in debt to their energy supplier. Households have suffered a barrage of price rises this year but they can turn the tables on the energy companies by voting with their feet."

Gas Safety Week 2018

Every year Gas Safety Week raises awareness of gas safety and the importance of ensuring the safe operation of your gas appliances. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas services.

Demonstrating our commitment to your safety, we are on the Gas Safe Register (registration no. 621972), and our registered engineers are approved to install, maintain and repair both domestic and non-domestic gas services.

Gas Safety Week raises awareness of the dangers of badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances, which can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can't see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.

This is why it is so important to ensure gas safety.

By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe:

Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Set a reminder so you don't forget at www.staygassafe.co.uk.
Make sure your engineer is Gas Safe registered. You can find and check an engineer at www.gassaferegister.co.uk or call 0800 408 5500.
Check your engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card. Double check that they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card.
Watch out for warning signs your appliances aren't working correctly e.g. lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room.
Know the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning: headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness.
Have an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home.

Landlords

Landlords are legally responsible for the safety of their tenants. If you're a landlord, you should make sure maintenance and annual safety checks on gas appliances are carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you're a landlord, you're legally obliged to:

Pipe-work, appliances and flues provided for tenants are maintained in a safe condition.
All appliances and flues provided for tenants' use have an annual safety check. Set a reminder so you don't forget at www.staygassafe.co.uk.
Maintenance and annual safety checks are carried out by an engineer registered with Gas Safe Register.
All gas equipment (including any appliance left by a previous tenant) is safe or otherwise removed before re-letting.
A Gas Safety Record is provided to the tenant within 28 days of completing the check or to any new tenant before they move in.
You keep a copy of the Gas Safety Record for two years.

Tenants

By law, landlords must keep gas appliances supplied for tenants in a good condition. Landlords should arrange a gas safety check every twelve months, and provide tenants with a record of this check.

If you purchase or own gas appliances as a tenant, you are responsible for their safe operation, not your landlord. It is your responsibility to check and service your gas appliances once a year to take care of your home and your loved ones.

Which Qualifications Are Required?

As a legal requirement, all Heating Engineers must be Gas Safe registered in order carry out gas work. There are two paths to Gas Safe registration:

NVQ

The most common path, especially for individuals with no industry experience aiming to pursue a career in heating and plumbing, is a National Vocational Qualification. Upon successful completion of NVQ Level 2 and 3 in the Plumbing & Domestic Heating (6189) with gas-related units, individuals achieve Gas Safe registration.

ACS

An alternative path for individuals with existing industry experience but no NVQs is the Accredited Certification Scheme. The ACS is assessed against a set of national criteria based on current standards, best working practice and the latest technology. Passing the ACS assessment enables individuals to become Gas Safe registered.

Gas Safe registration is valid for 12 months and requires renewal every year. Whether initially qualified via NVQ or ACS, individuals are required to successfully complete relevant ACS assessments every five years to be able to renew Gas Safe registration.

Additionally, as our Heating Engineers drive our branded vans to jobs, individuals require a full UK driving license (preferably with no penalty points).

Which Skills Are Required?

What Career Progression Is Available?

Our Heating Engineers are typically responsible for jobs involving gas appliances and bathrooms. This could range from gas boiler installations and servicing, to plumbing repairs in a family bathroom. As our Heating Engineers progress, there are multiple paths of career progression:

Oil Heating

In addition to gas appliances and bathrooms, our Heating Engineers have the opportunity to become OFTEC registered and be responsible for additional oil heating jobs too. OFTEC is a trade association that ensures standards of competence within the domestic oil heating industry.

Boiler Breakdowns

Alternatively, our Heating Engineers could specialise in boiler breakdowns and troubleshooting, a fundamental part of our customer care team. Our Breakdown Engineers are responsible for important boiler repairs, have increased customer interaction and could see potential earnings rise.

Senior Heating Engineers

The most ambitious and dedicated members of our workforce could progress to become Senior Heating Engineers. This includes involvement in the most important jobs with high specification materials, added responsibility and leadership opportunities. Our Senior Heating Engineers are responsible for training Heating Apprentices, helping them develop on-the-job skills in order to successfully complete their NVQs.

A Typical Day For A Heating Engineer

It's an early start with our Heating Engineers arriving at M&N Heating & Plumbing headquarters before 8am to be briefed by our Project Manager and Surveyors, and collect the required materials for the day ahead. This approach is the most comprehensive (as our workforce is instructed on specific job requirements), most efficient (as materials are prepared and collected promptly) and secure (as no materials are left in our vans overnight).

All our Heating Engineers are supplied with a tablet device with access to our management system, ensuring job details and timesheets are recorded efficiently for reporting and analysis. Once a job is completed, our customers' home is tidied up, leaving it exactly how it was upon arrival.

With access to their calendar via the tablet device, it's easy to keep track of appointments and understand when and where the next job is. Once finished for the day, our Heating Engineers return any surplus materials back to headquarters before heading home with a sense of achievement and satisfaction of a job well done.

How To Bleed Your Radiators

Air trapped in your radiators could be the cause of cold spots, longer than usual to heating times, or high water pressure in your boiler.

Bleeding your radiators can improve heating efficiency, remove cold spots in your radiators and reduce pressure in your boiler. It is a task that can be completed without the need for a Gas Safe registered heating engineer. Before attempting to bleed your radiators, check your heating system is cold and your boiler has not been in operation for at least one hour.

Your boiler heats water that is then circulated to radiators, outputting heat around your home. Heating water creates steam that could become trapped and cause cold spots often nearer the top of your radiators, which reduces their efficiency. Trapped air can also increase the water pressure in your heating system. It is recommended that the pressure gauge, usually found on the front of your gas boiler, reads between 1 and 2 bar.

To bleed your radiators you'll need a radiator key, which can be purchased at your local DIY store, and an old towel. It's best to start with radiators on the ground floor farthest away from your boiler, then move upstairs (again, starting with the radiators farthest from your boiler).

At the top of the radiator at one end, there will be a valve where the radiator key will fit. Hold the old towel closely beneath the valve and carefully turn the radiator key anticlockwise until you hear air hissing out of the open valve. Be ready to close the valve as when the trapped air has escaped, water will follow (this is why it's important to ensure your heating system is cold, otherwise it would be hot water). Ensure to securely close the valve, wipe down any spilled water, and repeat this process with all your radiators. Once completed, check the pressure gauge reads between 1 and 2 bar on your boiler. If you have a combi boiler, you may need to increase the pressure after bleeding your radiators.

Should the cold spots and slow heating times remain, you may have excess sludge, deposits, rust and debris in your radiators and may benefit from a power flush of your heating system. If a high boiler pressure remains and you've checked the valves of your filling loop are securely closed, you may have an issue with your boiler's expansion vessel, pressure gauge or filling loop. Remember, only Gas Safe registered heating engineers are legally allowed to work on gas appliances.

Switch off your boiler and ensure your heating system is cold for at least one hour.

Nearly 1,300 Unsafe Gas Appliances Found During Summer Months

New research from the Gas Safe Register has revealed that nearly 1,300 gas appliances were found to be unsafe last summer, an 18% increase when compared to the winter months.

The new findings from the Gas Safe Register also showed that just one in five UK adults (19% of 2,000 respondents) would only considering having their gas appliances checked if they stopped working. Unsafe gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. If it's been a year or more since your last gas safety check, you should book an annual boiler service in with our Gas Safe Registered team now.

Other summer-related findings discovered that respondents were five times more likely to worry about being too hot (32%), suffering from hay fever (25%) or sunburn (20%) during the summer months than CO poisoning (6%).

As Jonathan Samuel, Chief Executive of the Gas Safe Register, reiterates below the summer months are the best time for boiler repairs as you won't be left in the cold during the downtime:

"The sun may be shining but that doesn't mean that checking your gas appliances can be left until later in the year when you may be cranking up your heating. Our inspections data shows that it doesn't matter what time of year it is, your gas appliances could still put your health and home at risk if it's not been safety checked recently. It's important that gas appliances are checked regularly, we recommend on an annual basis so that you can have peace of mind that they're working safely and efficiently whilst making the most of the great British summer."

Further findings from the Gas Safe Register research outlined that gas leaks, explosions and CO poisoning from unsafe gas appliances resulted in 201 callouts from emergency services last year.

Charity Golf Day A Huge Success

As part of our fundraising efforts for Banbury's Let's Play Project, our chosen charity for 2018, we put our golfing skills to the test during a charity golf day on Friday 27th July 2018.

In partnership with Banbury Litho and LJ Construction, a group of our staff members took to the course at Tadmarton Heath Golf Club to raise funds for the Let's Play Project. The event also included a raffle and silent auction.

A Huge Success

The objective this year has been to help raise enough funds for the Let's Play Project to install an outdoor play area at its premises in Twyford, Banbury. With an estimated £7,000 cost, the outdoor play area would provide a safe, wheelchair accessible play provision for disabled young people in the local area.

New research by the Gas Safe Register has revealed that just two in five UK people (41%) who have hired a heating engineer check they're Gas Safe registered before letting them into their home.

This is despite the fact that heating engineers are the only tradespeople for whom it is necessary to be part of a registration body in order to legally carry out their work.

The Gas Safe Register teamed up with consumer psychologist Dr Simon Moore to investigate why UK people may cut corners and choose to have unsafe gas work completed by an unregistered heating engineer, putting them at risk of fires, explosions, gas leaks and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning from faulty gas appliances.

According to Dr Simon Moore, the main reason we cut corners with gas is that "humans are naturally trusting and our brains are very good at introducing biases that encourage us to trust people." How To Reduce Your Boiler Pressure

A high water pressure shouldn't stop your boiler working, however reducing the pressure to the recommended levels could help your boiler operate safely and efficiently.

Reducing the water pressure in your gas boiler is a task that can be completed without needing to call out a Gas Safe registered heating engineer. However, if you're unsure about anything, encounter any difficulties or have any questions, contact our friendly team on 01295 224844, or email hello@mnheating.co.uk and we'd be happy to assist you.

Before you attempt to reduce the water pressure, ensure your boiler is switched off, your central heating system is cold and hasn't been in operation for at least one hour.

It is recommended that the water pressure in heating system should be between 1 and 2 bar. Your boiler heats water, which causes the pressure in your system to increase. Boilers are designed and manufactured to handle quick increases in water pressure, and have a pressure relief valve if the pressure gets too high.

To determine whether you have a high water pressure, you can check the pressure gauge often found on the front of your gas boiler. If the water pressure is above 2 bar when your boiler is not in operation, then it is recommended you reduce to pressure to between 1 and 2 bar.

Firstly, check the valves on the filling loop are securely closed as they may have loosened or accidentally left open when re-pressurising your boiler. The filling loop should be found on the underside of most boilers, with two valves at both ends (either tap handles or flat-head screws on older boilers).

Alternatively, you may need to bleed your radiators to release pressure from your heating system. If the water pressure remains high after checking the valves on your filling loop are securely closed and you've bled your radiators, you may have an issue with your boiler's expansion vessel, pressure gauge or filling loop. This is a job for a Gas Safe registered heating engineer as only qualified individuals are legally allowed to work on gas appliances.

Recap

Switch off your boiler and ensure your heating system is cold for at least one hour.

Gas Safe Register Launches 'Don't Cut Corners with Gas' Campaign

Gas Safe Register has recently launched a new public awareness campaign - Don't Cut Corners With Gas.

The campaign's primary objective is to increase awareness of Gas Safe Register and encourage people to check the Register before an engineer works on gas appliances in their home.

What Is The Gas Safe Register?

Always remember to check an engineer's Gas Safe Register ID card before allowing them to work on your gas appliances.

Gas Safe Register conducts public awareness campaigns, such as Don't Cut Corners With Gas, to ensure people are aware of the risks of unsafe and illegal gas work, and other dangers such as carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Gas Safe Register is the co-ordinating body for the annual Gas Safety Week campaign.

Don't Cut Corners With Gas

The multi-channel marketing campaign includes UK-wide digital advertising with YouTube pre-rolls, Google display advertising and social media awareness, in addition to 30 second radio adverts on selected radio stations and out of home advertising.

To emphasise that people should always use a Gas Safe Registered engineer, DIY fails and serious gas horrors will be shared via social media channels. How To Increase Your Boiler Pressure

A loss of water pressure is a common reason your boiler might stop working.

Increasing the water pressure in your gas boiler is a task that can be completed without needing to call out a Gas Safe registered heating engineer. However, if you're unsure about anything, have questions or encounter any difficulties whilst increasing your boiler pressure, contact our friendly team on 01295 224844 today, or email hello@mnheating.co.uk and we'd be more than happy to assist you.

Before you attempt to increase the water pressure in your boiler, ensure your central heating system is cold, your boiler is switched off and hasn't been in operation for at least one hour.

To discover whether you have low water pressure, you need to check the pressure gauge that is often located on the front of your boiler. If the water pressure is below 1 bar when not in operation then your boiler will struggle to operate safely and efficiently. Your boiler requires a consistent water pressure between 1 and 2 bar.

To increase the water pressure in your boiler, you'll need to locate the filling loop often on the underside of most gas boilers. The filling loop should have two valves at either end with tap handles (or flat-head screws on older boilers). You need to open both the valves to allow cold water into your heating system, you should be able to hear this flow of water. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge and close the valves when the pressure reaches 1.5 bar. Once both valves are securely closed, switch your boiler back on and reset the fault code (if necessary).

Whilst increasing your boiler pressure doesn't require you to be Gas Safe registered, never attempt to fix your boiler yourself. It is illegal to work on gas appliances if you aren't Gas Safe registered.

Gas Safety Week is an annual safety week to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of ensuring the safe operation of your gas appliances. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas services.

Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can't see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.

By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe:

Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Set a reminder so you don't forget at www.staygassafe.co.uk.

Landlords

If you're a landlord, you're legally obliged to:

Pipe-work, appliances and flues provided for tenants are maintained in a safe condition.
All appliances and flues provided for tenants' use have an annual safety check. Set a reminder so you don't forget at www.staygassafe.co.uk.
Maintenance and annual safety checks are carried out by an engineer registered with Gas Safe Register.
All gas equipment (including any appliance left by a previous tenant) is safe or otherwise removed before re-letting.
A Gas Safety Record is provided to the tenant within 28 days of completing the check or to any new tenant before they move in.
You keep a copy of the Gas Safety Record for two years.

Tenants

By law, landlords must keep gas appliances supplied for tenants in a good condition. Landlords should arrange a gas safety check every twelve months, and provide tenants with a record of this check.

Everyone fears a boiler breakdown, especially once the colder months are with us. The following tips could not only help prevent your boiler from breaking down, but also keep your central heating system in top condition throughout the year.

Understand How Your Boiler Works

Knowing how your boiler works can help you detect any faults or problems, and could even save you money if you discover something is wrong before more damaged is caused. Ensure you read and understand your boiler's manual. If you've lost your manual, you might be able to download it from the manufacturer's website.

Annual Boiler Service

We understand that time flies and servicing your boiler can be easily forgotten, but boiler maintenance and regular checks can help prevent unexpected breakdowns and repairs. An annual boiler service can also protect those you care about and save you money!

Insulate Your Pipes

Available from most DIY shops, pipe insulation can prevent your pipework from seizing up when the temperatures drop below zero during winter. Pipe lagging can stop water in your pipework from freezing and bursting, prevent the build of condensation and save you money on your energy bills as the insulation helps preserve heat within your pipes.

System Power Flush

Power flushing your central heating system can prevent boiler breakdowns and significantly improve boiler efficiency. By circulating high-strength cleansing chemicals, a power flush can remove debris, rust and contaminants from your central heating and is more cost-effective than replacing an old, inefficient boiler.

Bleed Your Radiators

Trapped air in your central heating system can cause your boiler to work harder than it needs to, which can increase your energy costs. Bleeding your radiators is a relatively easy process that can help remove any trapped air within your central heating system. Ensure you monitor your boiler's water pressure after bleeding your radiators, the pressure should be between 1-1.5 bar.

Keep the Pressure On

Boiler are most efficient when the water pressure is between 1-1.5 bar, and consistent water pressure is necessary for the efficient operation of your gas boiler. A loss of water pressure can cause your boiler to breakdown. Most boilers have a pressure gauge on the boiler's front to display your heating system's water pressure.

Check Your Heating Regularly

If you have a combination gas boiler, it is advised to regularly turn on your boiler throughout the year, even during the warmer months when your central heating is not in use. To prevent breakdowns during winter, simply switch on your heating for 15 minutes once a month during the summer.

50% of UK Population Risk CO Poisoning

Recent research has found that nearly 27 million people are at risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, with 52% of respondents saying they don't have a CO alarm fitted in their home.

Carbon monoxide is produced when heating fuels such as gas or oil do not burn completely. The most common cause of this is when an appliance, such as a boiler or cooker, is installed incorrectly or poorly maintained. Carbon monoxide can also build up when flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.

When it comes to safety, respondents were almost twice as likely to fit a smoke alarm (86%) than a carbon monoxide alarm (48%). Window locks (69%) and double locks for doors (53%) were also more common than carbon monoxide alarms.

CO Alarm can be a Lifesaver

On average, over 50 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning each year, with a further 4,000 receiving hospital treatment. Carbon monoxide poisoning can affect people before they're even aware, that's why a CO alarm can be a lifesaver.

Lawrence Slade, a spokesperson for the 'Carbon Monoxide Be Alarmed!' campaign, said:

"It is worrying to think that over half of the population are not protecting themselves from carbon monoxide poisoning. This is a silent killer - you cannot see it, taste it or smell it. Protect yourself, and your family, by following the simple ABC checklist"

Our Chosen Charity For 2018

We're proud to announce that we have selected the Let's Play Project as our chosen charity for 2018.

Based locally in Banbury, the Let's Play Project specialises in the provision of play and leisure opportunities for disabled young people aged between 5 and 25 years old. The Let's Play Project believes in the equality of opportunity for all and the charity provides open access provision for disabled young people via after school and summer holiday clubs, activities and day trips.

Outdoor Play Area

Our objective is to raise enough funds for the Let's Play Project to install an outdoor play area at its premises in Twyford, Banbury. With an estimated £7,000 cost, the outdoor play area would provide a safe, wheelchair accessible play provision for disabled young people in the local area.

In partnership with Banbury Litho and LJ Construction, we're organising several fundraising events to take place over the next few months including a cake sale, a corporate golf day and a team challenge day.

Cake Sale & Raffle

Following the success of similar events in the past, Banbury Litho will be hosting a cake sale and raffle on Friday 22nd June 2018. We co-hosted "Banbury's Biggest Coffee Morning" in September 2017 and raised over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. A wide range of tasty treats, both sweet and savoury, will be available for a small donation to our chosen charity.

Corporate Golf Day

LJ Construction will be organising a corporate golf day in the coming months, to be hosted a golf club in the local Banbury area. Details to be confirmed nearer the time.

Team Challenge Day

We'll be organising a team challenge day before the end of the year, with our staff members competing in a strenuous challenge for donations towards the Let's Play Project. In September 2016, members of our team braved the Wolf Run, a 10 kilometre assault course with (W)oods, (O)bstacles, (L)akes and (F)ields. We raised over £3,000 for Mayday Trust and Helen & Douglas House.

The Fundraising's Already Begun

We've had a charity sweet box in our office for the past few weeks and our staff members, suppliers and customers have already donated enough funds to purchase a range of items from the Let's Play Project's wish list. A selection of footballs, rugby balls, basketballs and yoga balls, plus paints and painting equipment, were recently purchased and donated to the charity for local young people to utilise at their new premises. We Support Operation Christmas Child

We're delighted to be supporting Operation Christmas Child, organised by international relief and development organisation, Samaritan's Purse UK.

Our team has donated a range of toys, school supplies and toiletries to fill 19 shoeboxes that will be gifted to children in need around the world this Christmas. Our shoeboxes have been delivered to our local drop off centre in the hope of bringing some joy and cheer to the children that receive our gifts.

We Co-Hosted A Macmillan Coffee Morning

We joined forces with Banbury Litho to co-host "Banbury's Biggest Coffee Morning", raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

With one in three people being diagnosed with cancer, we wanted to show our support and help Macmillan Cancer Support achieve their goal that no one faces cancer alone.

We joined forces with Banbury Litho, a commercial printing company also based on Vantage Business Park, to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning on Thursday 28th September 2017.

An abundance of tasty treats and hot drinks were available for a small donation, and we were delighted to be joined by so many staff members, suppliers and customers.

In addition to the food and drink on offer, there was a "Bucket of Benefits" fundraising competition where entrants could win one of a fantastic range of prizes! Winners, seen below, were randomly selected by picking their business card out of a bucket. All of the prizes were kindly donated to raise money for this amazing cause.

We are sponsoring Josh Gotts in his debut senior season in the EnduroGP World Championship and the British Enduro Championship.

In 2016, Josh competed in the junior class, finishing the season in an impressive 15th place. The step up to the E2 class has required Josh to take time away from his engineering job, giving his full commitment to the very competitive EnduroGP World Championship.

A Good Day For M&N

We always ask our customers for their feedback so we can understand what we're getting right, and where we can improve. And here's proof the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Rosie Slater-Watts, Business Development Manager here at M&N, received a call from a Marketing Manager peer who simply wanted to congratulate those responsible for the cohesive marketing of M&N that she had experienced.

During the call she remarked, "I saw one of your vans parked outside my house and it instantly reminded me of your radio jingle I've heard on Banbury Sound."

For those of you who haven't heard it, we've adapted the 'Mah Na Mah Na' song originally by Piero Umiliani, but later popularised by The Muppet Show, to include M&N.

The caller continued, "So I checked out your website and felt compelled to phone and praise your marketing strategy! As a Marketing Manager, I was impressed with how your marketing channels combine for a strong, integrated strategy."

Our Team Donate Christmas Gifts

Over the festive period, we collected Christmas gifts for two fantastic charities, Home-Start UK and Mayday Trust.

A great collection of toys, child and baby gifts were donated to Home-Start UK, whilst a fantastic range of books, films and gadgets to Mayday Trust. The M&N team also fundraised to help Oxford Homeless Pathways (supported by Mayday Trust) host a Christmas Dinner for homeless people in Oxfordshire.

As a leading family support charity, Home-Start UK help families with young children to deal with the challenges they face. Home-Start's volunteers support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children.

16,000 volunteers support 30,000 families and 60,000 children across the United Kingdom. There are 269 local, independent Home-Starts, each with a focus upon home visiting volunteer support. Home-Starts also support families in groups, organise day trips, Christmas parties and assist with access to local services. We Hosted A Macmillan Coffee Morning

M&N Heating & Plumbing joined in with the World's Biggest Coffee Morning, hosting our own event to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Many M&N staff members have benefitted from the wonderful care and support that Macmillan offer, and we're happy to support the World's Biggest Coffee Morning as it's a cause close to our hearts. We were joined in support by Tibbetts Group Company, who are also on the Vantage Business Park.

Staff, suppliers and customers joined us for cake and fundraising activities, including several fundraising competitions such as Lucky Square, Spot the Cake and Best Baked Cake!

For those without a sweet tooth, we offered savoury options including bacon rolls, sausage rolls, scones and cheese twists.

Best Baked Cake Competition

In conjunction with Tibbetts Group Company, we ran a competition where people voted for their favourite cake. The top 5 cakes voted entered a social media voting competitiong on our Facebook page to decide the Best Baked Cake!

Cakes were selling for £1.50 a slice. The following cakes reached the final vote and Facebook users had the opportunity to Like their favourite over the weekend with the voting closing at 12pm on Monday 3rd October.

Our Team Brave The Wolf Run

A group of twenty-plus M&N Heating & Plumbing staff and partners braved the Autumn Wolf Run to support to two local charities, Mayday Trust and Helen & Douglas House.

Held on Saturday 3rd September 2016 at Welsh Road Farm in Warwickshire, the Wolf Run is a 10km off-road run featuring a series of man-made and natural obstacles, including (W)oods, (O)bstacles, (L)akes and (F)ields.

Natural, Raw Terrain

The idea is for participants to experience raw running conditions in natural terrain whilst also offering a challenging, interesting and enjoyable event. With a £3,000 fundraising target, the aim was to raise £1,500 for each of our two chosen charities, which you find out about below:

Helen & Douglas House rely on voluntary donations and require £5.5million each year to run the service. Founded in 1982, Helen House help families cope by providing personalised respite care modelled on that provided at home. With improvements in medical care, Douglas House opened in 2004 to specifically support those over 16, when a children's hospice environment isn't suitable.

Mayday Trust is a forward-thinking organisation that thrives on finding ways help people through tough times such as homelessness, leaving care or coming out of prison. Drizzly Saturday Morning

After weeks of training and preparation, the team were ready to brave the Wolf Run. Awaking to a drizzly Saturday morning, the conditions were perfect for slipping and sliding in the mud!

When asked about the experience Corey Swatton, Office Administrator here at M&N said, "The Wolf Run pushed every individual to their limits, but it was great fun! Everyone came together to make sure no one was left behind. The best part? The water slide and getting muddy!"

Katie Fisher added: "I didn't think I would ever allow myself to get that covered in mud, but the whole thing was awesome! The slide had to be the funniest obstacle! Everyone was brilliant, helping each other to get through it; I definitely couldn't have done it without them."

Smashed £3,000 Target!

We were delighted to say we smashed our £3,000 fundraising target, with many donations still rolling in! With both charities relying on donations to operate their much-needed services, we hope the funds assist with the fantastic support that both Helen & Douglas House and the Mayday Trust offer to those who need it.

We Celebrate 10,000th Job

We recently recorded our 10,000th job via our management system, and to celebrate we presented that lucky customer with a lovely bottle of bubbly!

Congratulations to Marion Hall from Chipping Norton! As our 10,000th job, Marion posed for a photo before our engineers conducted a no obligation survey for a bathroom installation.

In July 2010, we installed a new management system to track and access jobs effectively. This means we should never miss an appointment and enables our customer care team to provide accurate information regarding job progress.

We Sponsor Charity Football Match

We recently sponsored one of our Heating Engineer's participation in the Hospice Shield - a charity football match to help raise funds for Helen & Douglas House and Katherine House Hospices.

After the success of previous fundraising matches hosted at MK Dons in 2012, and Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2014, a third Hospice Shield was organised for 14 May 2016. Taking place at the Aggborough Stadium, home of Kidderminster Harriers Football Club, this years' Hospice Shield saw a King's Park XI take on Deddington Town Football Club.

Over 125 Years' of Football

Formed in 1888, Deddington Town F.C. is one of the oldest football clubs in Oxfordshire. With 13 teams, from under 7's to men's first and reserve team, Deddingon Town F.C. attend weekly training and were bound to give the King's Park XI a tough game.

"He's One of Our Own!"

After playing in the previous two Hospice Shield events, our Heating Engineer, Andrew Simpson, played once again for the King's Park XI. In a mix-n-match team, the King's Park XI had a tough time against an organised Deddington Town. Whilst managing to put two in the net, Deddington Town F.C. eventually won the game 4-2.

In addition to the football, there was a raffle containing superb prizes, and a special guest appearance from ex-professional footballer and Sky Sports commentator, Tony Cottee.

A total of £2,267.50 was raised and split equally between the two hospices. Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful cause!

M&N Heating's Wolf Pack

In addition to the Hospice Shield, we have selected Helen & Douglas House Hospice as one of two chosen charities when our Wolf Pack brave The Wolf Run on 3rd September 2016. Helen & Douglas House provide hospice care for children and young adults.

Opening in November 1982, Helen's House was the world's first children's hospice, setup to provide personalised respite care tailored to individual needs. Whilst Douglas House provides an environment specifically for young adults, providing the time to do thing they like to do with the support of a nursing and care team.

Stuart Dances At Strictly Banbury 2016

The hugely popular Strictly Banbury returned this weekend, and our own Stuart Copp donned his sequins and dancing shoes for the annual ballroom challenge.

Organised by the Step By Step Dance School, the 2016 competition promised to be more spectacular than ever. Now in its seventh year, Strictly Banbury began in 2009 when the Step By Step Dance School held the inaugural competition in conjunction with the Banbury Guardian.

The competition has heated up year on year, with increasing numbers of local and heroic fundraisers training tirelessly for the Strictly Banbury crown.

Stuart Does The Cha Cha

After weeks of training, our very own Stuart Copp, and his dance partner Stacey, competed in the Cha Cha and Viennese Waltz events on Saturday evening. Whilst Stuart & Stacey didn't win their events, they had an amazing time competing and deserve the biggest congratulations!

Over £10,000 Raised For Local Charities!

The 2016 competition featured three nights of sparkling entertainment and competition, all in support of the Thames Valley Air Ambulance and Age UK Oxfordshire. With tickets at £17.50, and additional donations made throughout the weekend, Strictly Banbury 2016 raised a whopping £9,053 for Thames Valley Air Ambulance and £2,114 for Age UK Oxfordshire.

Funds Raised For Cancer Research UK

We recently sponsored one of our Technical Managers' participation in a charity boxing match to help raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

As Oxfordshire's largest independent heating and plumbing company, we believe it's important to be active and involved in the local community and support our staff in their charitable endeavours.

A Cause Close To His Heart

Terry Anderton, a Technical Manager here at M&N Heating & Plumbing, signed up for Ultra White Collar Boxing - the fastest growing corporate contact sport organisation in the world. Terry opted to participate in a UWCB event, as their chosen charity, Cancer Research UK, is close to his heart. Terry's father-in-law has been bravely fighting prostate, pancreatic and stomach cancer for over four years.

Do Something Amazing

All UWCB participants are complete beginners that want to raise money for charity, improve their fitness and do something amazing they'll remember forever. Terry completed the intensive eight week training programme at his local gym with professional boxing coaches. After this, he was matched with an opponent based on weight, fitness, ability and age to ensure a fair, competitive bout on 10 April 2016 in Milton Keynes.

"Two Tonne Terry"

It wouldn't have been a proper boxing match without a ludicrous ring name and catchy entrance music, with "Two Tonne Terry" opting for Chas & Dave's Gertcha. In the blue corner with his father-in-law's name, Mike, embroided on the waist band, Terry fought like a hero. In a hotly-contested fight, the judges were left undecided, resulting in a split decision. Personally, we thought he should have won!

Terry Raised £651.25

Whilst UWCB participants are only required to raise £50 for Cancer Research UK, Terry raised an incredible £651.25! With other boxing matches scheduled throughout the evening, UWCB raised over £20,000 for Cancer Research UK.

World Plumbing Day Baking Competition

Today is World Plumbing Day!

To celebrate the important role plumbing has in the health and safety of modern society, the World Plumbing Council initiated an international event every year on 11 March. This year, M&N Heating & Plumbing held a plumbing-related baking competition to help raise awareness of World Plumbing Day.

In partnership with the World Health Organisation, the World Plumbing Council (WPC) works year-round to develop and promote the image and standards of the plumbing industry worldwide. The WPC's mission statement is 'to promote the role of plumbing in the improvement of public health and safeguarding the environment by uniting the plumbing industry worldwide for the benefit of all'.

Whilst every year, 11 March is a day to mark the occasion and draw attention to the importance of high quality plumbing and sanitation.

650m People Without Safe Water

Whilst we may take clean water for granted here in the UK, more than 650 million people worldwide live without safe drinking water. The World Plumbing Council has a pivotal role in improving public health through the provision and protection of safe water.

Competition Time

To help raise awareness, M&N Heating & Plumbing employees were encouraged to demonstrate their baking skills with a plumbing-related cake competition. The baker with the most Facebook likes by 4pm would receive a bottle of bubbly for the weekend.

The Entries

There were four entries in total, including a leaking bath atop a sponge cake, M&N Heating & Plumbing gingerbread men, World Plumbing Day shortbread biscuits and a last minute pun-related entry. The final entry suggested calling M&N Heating & Plumbing should you have 'Frozen' or 'leeking' pipes!

The Winner Is...

The M&N Heating & Plumbing gingerbread men stole the show with the most likes, beating the leaking bath sponge cake in second, and the 'Frozen' & 'leeking' pipes entry in third. Thank you to everyone who liked and shared the post, achieving the main aim to raise awareness for this important event in the plumbing industry.

Our Heating Apprentice Of The Year 2016

An M&N Heating & Plumbing apprentice was selected to represent Moulton College in the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016.

On Wednesday 17 February 2016, our very own Jordon Brooks participated in the Midlands regional heat of the HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year 2016 competition held at Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire.

With only one student per college, M&N Heating & Plumbing is proud of Jordon's selection to represent Moulton College, competing against thirteen other regional colleges. To enter, students must be studying towards NVQ Level 2/3 and successfully pass a previous years' practical test paper.

HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year

The HIP UK Heating Apprentice of the Year competition is an annual event, which has been running since 2009. It provides apprentices with the opportunity to test their skills against fellow students and the opportunity to win great prizes. With over seventy apprentices competing in the regional heats, 2016 represents the most competitive year for the event.

Tough Competition

Jordon faced tough competition on the day and, unfortunately, didn't progress to the national heat. However, the judges commended all the students for the very high standards of their work, outlining there was only a few marks that separated all fourteen students.

Jordon's mentor, John Kendrick - Plumbing & Heating Lecturer at Moulton College - was pleased with his installation, adding that "he worked very hard produce a quality piece and entered into the spirit of the competition".

M&N Heating & Plumbing is proud to operate its own apprenticeship scheme for young, bright and enthusiastic people to develop their heating and plumbing skills with hands-on experience.

All apprentices employed by us work closely with, and are supervised by, a fully-qualified engineer until they have successfully completed their training. In addition to hands-on experience, our apprentices undertake Plumbing & Domestic Heating (6189) qualification provided by City & Guilds, to a Level 2 minimum.
